Orthopedic Vet Surgery
Vancouver Vet Orthopedic Surgery for dogs arthritis
Arthroplasty is a general term for any surgical procedure that changes or modifies the structure of a joint.
Osteotomy. The term osteotomy means to cut bone. In this procedure, the bones are cut and rotated and then repaired using bone plates and screws to realign a joint. Examples of osteotomy include:
Ulnar osteotomy for elbow dysplasia. The ulna or small bone of the forearm is cut and moved to achieve realignment of the elbow joint.
Triple pelvic osteotomy for hip dysplasia in dogs. The pelvis is cut in three places, rotated, and then repaired with a special bone plate and screws to realign the hip joint.
Excisional arthroplasty, in which part of a joint is removed. The most common of these procedures is the femoral head and neck excision for hip dysplasia in dogs. In this procedure, the top of the thigh bone (the ball of the ball and socket of the hip joint) is cut out and discarded.
